癫痫是全球最常见神经系统疾病之一，抗癫痫药物（AED）仍是首选治疗，AED的不良反应对生活质量有很大影响，甚至导致治疗失败。丙戊酸（VPA）现仍是最有效的AED之一，在各种神经和精神疾病中具有多方面的治疗作用，服用AED的癫痫患者中超过50%患有骨骼异常，其中接受慢性VPA治疗（≥1年）的癫痫患者,骨密度(BMD)出现明显降低。本综述概述了有关VPA对生长和骨代谢的影响，并强调需要谨慎使用和及时采取相应措施以避免严重残疾。
