Shifting the concept and methods of talent cultivation, enhancing the quality of applied talent training, and adapting to the needs of local economic and social development are inevitable requirements for the transformation of local colleges towards an applied orientation. As the core element in achieving the goal of talent cultivation, curriculum construction and reform play a significant role in improving the quality of applied talent training. Taking the major of Human Geography and Urban and Rural Planning at Leshan Normal University as an example, this paper discusses the teaching reform of the compulsory course of Metrological Geography within the major. It proposes how to optimize course teaching using research-based and project-oriented principles, with the aim of supporting the cultivation of applied talents in Human Geography and Urban and Rural Planning.
