Abstract: With the advancement of the "the belt and road initiative" initiative, enhancing the international competitiveness of Chinese graduate students has become an important goal of higher education. Taking Northwestern Polytechnical University Kazakhstan Branch as the research object, this paper discusses how to improve the competitiveness of graduate students in the international academic and professional market by optimizing the scientific research training mode. First of all, this paper sorts out the current situation of educational internationalization under the background of "the belt and road initiative" and its impact on postgraduate education; Secondly, based on the relationship between scientific research training and international competitiveness, a scientific research training mode adapted to the cross-cultural environment is constructed. By collecting data through questionnaires and interviews, this paper analyzes the actual situation and main challenges of scientific research training in Kazakhstan branch, and then puts forward some promotion strategies including international cooperation, academic exchange and resource allocation. The results show that through systematic scientific research training and the cultivation of cross-cultural ability, the international vision and scientific research ability of graduate students have been significantly improved, which provides a reference model and experience for educational cooperation among countries along the "the belt and road initiative".
