A Corpus-based Study on the English Synonyms: All and Very

This study examined two synonymous adverbs in English, namely “all” and “very”, in terms of their stylistic levels, grammatical patterns, and collocates, compared and contrasted between British English and American English. This can be done with the help of corpora COCA and BNC. The research results are shown that firstly when the two words as adverbs, they usually are used in informal genres. Secondly, it could be said American English and British English are similar in grammatical patterns about “all” and “very”. Lastly, in the aspect of collocates, there are same usage of adverbs “all” and “very” in British and American English, and the two languages have their specific usages as well.
