From Test-Oriented to Self-Determined Aspiration: The Moderating Role of Motivation in Second Language Acquisition among Chinese Students Enrolled in Media-Related Programs

This study investigates the shift in English learning motivation among media majors from an instrumental, test-driven "ought-to" orientation to an identity-based "ideal self" that reflects the aspiration to become international communicators. Grounded in Dörnyei’s L2 Motivational Self System (L2MSS), the study also examines the moderating role of media affinity in this motivational transformation. The analysis identifies two distinct motivational trajectories. Exposure to test-oriented media content reinforces instrumental motivation but provides limited support for identity development. In contrast, engagement with role model of media content, such as vlogs produced by international journalists, enhances identity-based motivation, supports the development of a Ought-to L2 Self (OTS) , and facilitates the transition from the natural to the ideal self. These findings extend the applicability of L2MSS to media education contexts and propose a content-mediated, identity-oriented instructional framework for fostering internationally communicative competence.
