Abstract: This paper aims to deeply explore the aesthetic significance of Shakespeare’s portrayal of clowns in different literary works. By constructing four independent corpora containing more than 200,000 words, covering the four tragedies and Twelfth Night, this paper systematically analyzes the textual data by using statistical methods. It is found that clowns show significant high frequency characteristics when using words such as negative adverb ‘Not’, which is universal. However, the images of clowns in different situations have different aesthetic meanings, which reveals Shakespeare’s deep understanding and unique use of clowns. The analysis of this paper provides a new perspective for understanding the aesthetic value of clowns in Shakespeare's literary works.
