Ugliness is a cultural phenomenon, and in the long history, Chinese culture and Western culture have different choices for the aesthetic examination of "ugliness". This paper intends to compare several specific historical stages in western culture and Chinese culture, and analyze the differences between western and Chinese culture's aesthetic examination of "ugliness" in different historical and cultural contexts. Through the comparison of Chinese and Western aesthetic concepts and cultures, this paper studies and analyzes the interpretation and utilization of the image of "ugly" in the Chinese and Western aesthetic contexts, so as to put forward the rationality of the view of "discussing the Tao with ugliness", explore the unique rhythm of traditional Chinese culture and the continuity and diversity of today's Chinese culture, and then highlight the way of harmony, tolerance and elegance of Chinese culture. This paper not only expounds the viewpoint of "discussing the Tao with ugliness" in traditional Chinese aesthetic thought, but also has a certain positive effect on enriching and improving Chinese aesthetic theory in the study of modern and contemporary aesthetics.
