Navigating the Cultural Divide: A Comparative Analysis of the Symbolic Significance of the Color Red in Chinese and American Societies

Color words are a very special member of the language vocabulary system. It is not only an expression of the inherent color of the object itself, but also an embodiment of national culture. Through color words, we can understand the customs, aesthetic tastes, etc. of a nation. In order to further understand the color words in Chinese and American culture, this article chooses one basic color word, red, to conduct research. This article mainly illustrates the similarities and differences of the background information and connotation of the color of red by giving examples and comparative analysis, and to some extent supplements the reasons for different cultural connotations of the color word red. It can help English learners more profoundly recognize the root of Chinese and American culture difference of the color of red, thus can enhance communication skills and strengthen cultural identity. Then it can also help English language learners use the color of red better and more appropriately and avoid culture shock and culture conflict in cross-cultural communication. In English teaching in China, this article can also help students better understand the connotation of red in both Chinese and American culture, as well as the values and cultural psychology embodied in cultural connotations.
