Aristotle’s rhetorical appeal has a strong persuasive function. He thinks that a successful speech should have three rhetorical appeals: emotional appeal, personality appeal and logos appeal. Clever use of rhetoric three appeals can achieve the speaker's purpose and reflect the speaker's language ability. Based on J.K. Rowling's speech at the graduation ceremony of Harvard University in 2008, that is, “The Fringe Benefits of Failure, and the Importance of Imagination”. This paper uses Aristotle's theory of three appeals to analyze the language characteristics and explore how J.K. Rowling used speech strategies to achieved her speech purpose.
